Victorian Revival Mercury Glass Bead & Tinsel Christmas Ornament - Little Girl Portrait
Victorian Revival Mercury Glass Bead & Tinsel Christmas Ornament - Little Girl Portrait
Made of antique / vintage materials (Victorian trade card die cut, 1920s tinsel [yes, the real stuff], C.1950 Japan mercury glass beads, here's a Victorian Revival ornament that just needs a hook at the top to make complete. Crafted in the 1980s, I purchased a number of these decorations from a vendor at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. What I liked most about the ornaments was that they were reinforced at the back with cardboard - this way, the piece wouldn't fall apart like the genuine old pieces were so fond of doing.
The gold tinsel that frames the little girl image at the center appears to be wrapped on wire; the gold glass mercury beads are strung on wire as well. The die cut is glued to the tinsel and does, I must admit, hold the image perfectly. From top of glass beads to bottom of glass beads measures 4-1/4". Width is 2". Definitely looks antique because all the parts are mid century or older!
You can spend a lot of money on true Victorian era ornaments but they do tend to deteriorate after each year of use - this piece is a little more sturdy and should last a lifetime. After all, I've already had it for close to 45 years myself!
NOTE: Like all glass Christmas ornaments, this piece should be wrapped in tissue and laid flat when storing. Nothing heavy should be placed on top.
